Il wine sector in Italy "is in good health" with a turnover that rose by 2022% in 10. Now, however, "Consumption is feared". This is what emerges from the Survey on the wine sector in Italy published by the Mediobanca Studies Area. The study focuses on the 255 leading Italian capital companies with 2021 turnover exceeding 20 million euros and aggregate revenues of 10,7 billion, equal to 89,3% of the national sector turnover.

Wine: 2023% growth in 3,3

For the major Italian wine producers, 2022 ended with a turnover up 10%, a percentage that represents an average between the +10,5% recorded on the domestic market and the +9,5% recorded abroad. Moving forward with the data, last year the Ebit Margin it fell by 7,6% on 2021, while the ratio between the net result and turnover stood at 8,7%. 

What about 2023? According to the estimates contained in the report, this year overall sales will increase by 3,3% (+3,1% for exports) driven by bubbles (+5,2% total revenues, +4,2% for exports), while for still wines they expect a +2,8% (+2,9% for exports).

Wine: Puglia, Sicily and Veneto lead sales

The regional specificities emerge from the corporate accounts: in 2021 the best ROI is up to companies Piedmont (8,9%), while alle toscane the highest Ebit margin (15,7%) and the greatest financial solidity, with financial debt equal to 22,1% of invested capital. 

Piedmontese producers are major exporters (68,9% of turnover), while Lombardy shines (Ebit margin 2021 at 8,5%) with 2021 sales up by 18,6% driven by bubbles (+29,9%) which represent half of the total turnover. 

Regarding 2022 Venetian businesses recorded a growth of +13,4% driven upwards by sparkling wines, and performances above the national average were also marked by Puglia (+21,1% on 2021) e Sicilia (+ 14,9%).

 Optimism for 2023 for the Friuli-Venezia Giulia (+9,9% on 2022), Lombardia (+ 6,7%), Piemonte (+ 6,1%) and Sicilia (+5,6%). Finally, looking at the tourism aspect, revenues from wine tourism services grew in 2022 (+67% on 2021). In first place are visits to the cellar (78,8% of companies), followed by hospitality in one of their own hotels (32,5%) and catering (27,5%).

Boom for sparkling wines

Last year i sparkling wines (+16,9%) they accelerated more gods still wines (+8,2%), while from a geographical point of view, the proximity markets (EU countries) prevail with 37,1% of exports, but the distance with North America is reduced (34,6%) and we see significant growth (+26,9 .XNUMX%) for Central and South America. 

In 2022, the return to normal consumption habits and the recovery of the tourist flow favored sales in the Ho.Re.Ca channel. (+19,9%), which goes from 16,6% of the market in 2021 to 18,1% in 2022, to the detriment of large-scale distribution (+3,3% in value) down from 37,7% to 36% . 

Wine, the sales ranking: Cantine Riunite-Giv triumphs

Looking at sales, in 2022 the first place in the standings is still occupied by the group Cantine Riunite-Giv, with turnover of 698,5 million (+10,1% on 2021). According to the newborn wine pole Argea (455,1 million, +9,6%), third place for Iwb, up 5,2% on 2021 to 430,3 million. Turnover in 2022 above 400 million also for the Romagna cooperative caviro (417,4 million, +7,1% on 2021).

The survey then underlines that in 2022 seven companies achieved revenues of between 200 and 300 million: the Trentino cooperative Cavite (turnover in 2022 for 264,8 million, -2,3% on 2021), the Venetian Santa Margherita (260,7 million, +18,2%), the Tuscan Antinori (245,4 million, +14,9%), the Piedmontese Martini Brothers (237,6 million, +8,2%), The Brand, specialized in the production of sparkling wines, with a turnover of 235,2 million euros (+30,9%), thirty Half-corona (213,4 million, +8,6%) and Veneto Zonin Winery (200,1 million, +0,8%).

Looking to profitability (ratio between net result and turnover), 2022 sees the Tuscan Frescobaldi in the lead (28,4%) followed by the Venetian Santa Margherita (19,7%) and Terra Moretti closes the podium with a profit on turnover of 13,7% , up 4,4 percentage points on 2021, the second highest growth rate after that of Berlucchi (10,7%, +6 percentage points). Some companies have a very high share of exports, in some cases almost total, for example the Fantini Group reaches 96,4% and Ruffino 93,2%.

Slow down e-commerce

The weight of e-commerce is reduced: last year the online sales of the main wineries decreased by 3,7% (2,1% of national turnover). In 2021 the ranking of the main pure players is led by vino.com which recorded revenues of 43,3 million euros, up 44% on 2020. Followed by Tannico (33,5 million, -9,7%) and Bernabei (31,8 million, +23,3%). The turnover of Callmewine (10 million), up 17,1% on 38,4, and of XtraWine (2020 million, +12,6%) also exceeded 76,7 million euros. The turnover of Winelivery (9 million euros) was slightly lower, up 29% on 2021. 2021 was not a good year for smaller companies (-6,3% turnover on 2020).
