“This year, in addition to being the 25th year of the fall of the Berlin Wall and the tenth anniversary of the enlargement, has been fifteen years since we started our strategy here. We did it thinking about the long term and I think that's the key to success”: these are the words of Unicredit CEO Roberto Nicastro from Warsaw, where the bank in Piazza Aulenti began its international expansion by acquiring the Polish bank Pekao in 1999.
Since that time, followed by thethe acquisition in 2005 of the German Hvb and of Bank Austria, the conquest of Eastern Europe has begun, an area in which Unicredit is now the leading player and on which it continues to focus, despite the Ukrainian crisis. “We are long-term investors – Nicsatro also said – so the Russian-Ukrainian crisis does not change Unicredit's strategies in the area, because the Italian group considers itself a long-term investor, whose presence is rooted”.
