Trenitalia, automatic refunds from 2025: direct compensation on the card for delays

As of January 2025, Trenitalia will introduce an important news for regional train travellers: reimbursement for delays exceeding 60 minutes will be automatically credited on the card used to purchase the electronic ticket. The initiative aims to simplify the compensation process and to improve the passenger experience, making the relationship with the main Italian railway company, entirely controlled by Ferrovie dello Stato, more immediate and transparent.

Automatic Trenitalia Refund: How it Works

The compensation will be calculated according to the rules already in force:

  • 25% of the ticket price for delays between 60 and 119 minutes (for tickets of at least 16 euros)
  • 50% of the ticket price for delays of 120 minutes or more (for tickets of at least 8 euros)

No refunds are provided for amounts under 4 euros or for free tickets. The amount will be credited within 30 days of travel, thus eliminating the need for passengers to submit a formal request. However, the procedure applies exclusively to electronic tickets; those using paper tickets will have to continue to follow the traditional methods.

Who is entitled to a full refund

In particular situations, Trenitalia guarantees the full ticket refund, without deductions. This occurs in the case of:

  • Train cancellation
  • Trip interruption or expected delay of more than 60 minutes
  • Unavailability of the class indicated on the ticket
  • Orders of the Public Authority

Train Refund: How to Check Compensation

Passengers can check their own right to compensation via the official Trenitalia website. By entering the ticket code and the issue date in the dedicated section, it will be possible Check the status of your refund starting from the train arrival time. The function is available only for tickets sold through official channels and electronically controlled by the on-board staff.

The “Tap&Tap”

Automatic refund it's not the only innovation that Trenitalia has in store. The company is in fact investing in the “Tap&Tap” system, which allows you to pay for your trip by holding a contactless payment card near the validators. This service, already launched on some lines, will be progressively extended at national level, with the aim of further simplifying the travel experience for passengers.
