Ecological transition: Intesa Sanpaolo meets the SMEs of Milan and Monza Brianza

Intesa Sanpaolo met the pmi the province of Milano e Monza Brianza to talk about the opportunities of ecological transition.

The discussion took place during the conference “ESG, towards a sustainable transition: scenarios and opportunities for Italian companies” organized by the Bank which saw the participation of several local entrepreneurs for a reflection on the importance and advantages of green transition and digitization for the system manufacturing, in line with the objectives of the PNRR.

The economy of the Milan and Monza Brianza area has many strengths

According to research by the Studies and Research Department of Intesa Sanpaolo, analyzing the economy of the territory of the provinces of Milan and Monza Brianza, emerge many strengths:

  • Presence of important players with high specialization in advanced sectors, such as ICT, Finance and Logistics
  • High competitiveness on international markets, with exports growing by 2022% in the first nine months of 22,7 compared to the corresponding period of 2021 thanks to the boost from the pharmaceutical, chemical, fashion system and engineering sectors.
  • The wealth of know-how and skills of the local productive fabric allows a high productive diversification and a good ability to successfully enter new market niches and to specialize in new sectors. Over the years, new successful specialization sectors have emerged such as cosmetics and food supplements.
  • There is a propensity to patent and to create new businesses innovative sources of technological spillovers. In the two provinces, in January 2023, there are approx 2.975 innovative start-ups, with the province of Milan holding first place in the national ranking (with 2.820).
  • Important attention to green patents. The enterprises of this area also have a high sensitivity to environmental issues. The district of Metalworking instrumental of Milan and Monza, is placed at first place among those monitored by Intesa Sanpaolo by number of green patents (represents 26% of the district total).

Furthermore, the manufacturing companies of the territories of Milan and Monza and Brianza which hold certifications environmental, in the last three years (2019-2021) have recorded results, in terms of EBITDA Margin, higher than those that do not have any.

However, the share of companies aiming at a more circular economy is still low. Few are those that use secondary raw materials (12%), reuse or recycle waste water (3%) or with plants for the production of electricity from renewable sources (4%). There is therefore ample room for improvement.

For Intesa there is therefore a necessary investment revival (especially in technology) which, in perspective, can be supported by the thrust of the PNRR.

The Group's objective is to promote creation of new supply chain processes and qualitative enhancement of those in existence. In Lombardy, over 200 supply chain contracts and 4.200 suppliers have already been activated for a total turnover of over 24 billion euros.
