Tim, 40 years ago the first optical fiber in the world

Tim's journey, which started from Turin, has continued over the years thanks to the group's constant attention to investments and innovation, up to the current leadership in the development of the 5G network.

On 15 September 1977, exactly 40 years ago, Tim laid the first fiber optic cable in Turin between the Stampalia and Lucento urban telephone exchanges. The connection was made as part of an experiment coordinated by Cselt (Centre for Studies and Telecommunications Laboratories), the company of the then Sip dedicated to research and development, now known as Tim Open Lab.

The world record established at that time by Sip made it possible to successfully experiment with various digital transmission systems, with simulations through overall lengths ranging from 1 to 17 kilometres, and performing the joints in a very short time, thanks to an innovative patented method, called Springroove .

Tim's journey that started from Turin has continued over the years thanks to the group's constant attention to investments and innovation, up to the current leadership in the development of the 5G network.

To date, Tim has brought the ultra-fast fiber optic connection throughout the country, reaching 71% coverage with over 17 million homes in about 2.100 municipalities, thanks to the important investments made in recent years and which in the three-year period 2017-2019 are equal approximately 11 billion euros in Italy, 5 of which dedicated exclusively to the development of fixed and mobile ultra-broadband.
