Terna: the authorization procedure for the Adriatic Link between Abruzzo and Marche has been launched

The Ministry of the Environment and Energy Security has initiated the authorization procedure for the construction of theAdriatic Link, the new direct current submarine power line, which will connect Abruzzo and Marche.

Adriatic Link: the details of the work

Terna will invest further on the Adriatic Link 1 billion euro involving around 120 direct and related businesses.

Once fully operational, the work will allow iIncrease the exchange capacity by about 1000 MW between central-southern and central-northern areas of Italy, increasing the safety, efficiency and resilience of the entire national electricity transmission grid.

From a technical point of view, the 'invisible' power line, approximately 250 km long, will consist of two submarine cables of approx 210 km and two terrestrial cables of about 40 km. The two converter stations will be built near the respective existing electrical stations of Cepagatti (PE), for Abruzzo, and Fano (PU), for the Marches, and will have a very limited impact on the territory.

The pose of the cables at sea will reach a maximum depth of 100 meters. “For landfalls – Terna reports – the use of the technique will be used horizontal drilling subsidiary which will allow the pipeline to be installed, limiting the environmental and social impacts on the coast and guaranteeing the protection of the electricity connection in the event of coastal erosion. Likewise, for the land route the existing road network will be used for the most part".

CEO Donnarumma: "Fundamental step for the energy transition"

“The start of the Adriatic Link authorization process by the Ministry of the Environment and Energy Security is another pfundamental ace for the energy transition process underway”, said Stefano Donnarumma, Terna's CEO. “Thanks to the work of all Terna people and the active contribution of the Ministries, Regions and all the Entities involved, it was possible speed up the authorization process of the work, which is expected to become fully operational by 2028".

The role of the Adriatic Link in the energy transition

Given its strategic importance, the Regulatory Authority for Energy, Networks and the Environment has requested the entry into operation two years in advance compared to the initial forecasts. “The Adriatic Link will play a leading role in the development and integration of renewables contributing to the decarbonisation of the Italian energy system and – in line with the objectives outlined by the Integrated National Energy and Climate Plan (Pniec) – will further strengthen Terna's role as director and enabler of the ecological transition, as well as that of Italy as Europe's electricity hub and of the entire Mediterranean area”, underlines the company.
