Telecom, green light from the Board of Directors for the spin-off of the fixed network. Telefonica abstains

Green light for the spin-off of the telecom network. "The board of directors - reads a note - following the mandate given to management on 11 April last, concerning the definition of the feasibility operational path for the separation of the Telecom access network, resolved to approve the network spin-off project of access".

Telefonica, shareholder of Telecom through Telcowould have abstained and the board of directors would have given the green light to the spin-off without divisions. Cesar Alierta, owner of Telefonica, did not in fact take part in today's board meeting, for personal reasons, but during the board meeting convened on May 23, he expressed his opposition to the network corporate restructuring project. Now the disclosure of the project to the Communications Authority is starting, which will have to examine it in relation to the effects on the current regulation. And contacts will be resumed with Cassa Depositi e Prestiti, which is interested in entering the network's newco with a minority stake.

"The board of directors - reads the note - also reaffirmed the mandate to the management to continue the ongoing contacts with the CDP for its possible entry into the capital of the access network company". The newco, which in any case will not start before 18 months, will bring together activities and resources relating to the development and management of the passive access network, both in copper and in fibre, as well as the active component of the fiber represented by OLT (Optical Line Termination) and Cabinet.

This is the infrastructure that connects homes to the Telecom switchboard. "The new entity – specified Telecom – will guarantee all operators access to the fixed network". The European "equivalence of input" model of equal treatment will be applied, both incoming and outgoing. Among the services offered by the new company, theLocal Loop Unbundling (ULL) and Virtual Unbundling Local Access (VULA) for new generation networks based on FTTCab and FTTH architectures.
