Stellantis, discussion with the Government on the future of the factories: the circle is narrowing. After Melfi it's Mirafiori's turn. Here are the scenarios

Stellantis-Government, a tightening circle. In fact, discussions began today on the Italian production hubs. At the headquarters of the Ministry of Business and Made in Italy (Mimit), the first round is dedicated to Melfi factory. Tomorrow, however, will be the turn of mirafiori, one of the plants on which the unions' greatest concerns are concentrated. And right at the end of the face-to-face meeting in Melfi (however the group's number one was absent, Carlo Tavares) the minister Adolfo Urso he commented: “The Government has already given, now it's up to stellantis".

As for the production numbers 2023 from Stellantis, here's a quick one summarizes: last year the car manufacturer assembled 751.384 models, 521.104 cars and 230.280 commercial vehicles, or 9,6% more than in 2022. However, according to Acea data released in February, the top three car manufacturers that dominate the car market auto in Europe (EU+EFTA+UK) they hold shares in the following proportions: 25,7% is in the hands of the German group Volkswagen; Stellantis has 18,7%, while Renault has 9,7%. In February 2024, Stellantis registered 185.897 vehicles, 11,2% more than in the same month last year.

Urso: "The Government has already given, now it's Stellantis' turn"

“The government has already given, it has put in place a policy for the car, how to change European policy on the car sector, it has created an incentive plan for innovation and created an incentive plan for the car. Now it's up to the company to adapt its industrial and financial plan to what the Italian system expects, not the government but the Italian system." The Minister of Business and Made in Italy said it, Adolfo Urso, at the end of the Stellantis table on Melfi with the unions. “I understand that Tavares protects the interests of shareholders, but the government protects the interests of Italians,” underlined the minister.

“The company did not present a plan today, for them today it was an interlocution but we asked them to quickly present a clear plant-by-plant plan and these days are the ones that can make us understand if there is common ground with which compare ourselves and so that in the end there is a plan shared by the social and productive forces and therefore by the unions, by Anfia which represents the related activities on what will be the development plan in our country", explained Urso. “Today a process began in which the production objectives, one million in our country, and the investments to be made were examined at an overall level.

Stellantis, five models for Melfi

“The company – continued Urso – reiterated that it intends to build five models in Melfi, which was the commitment made by CEO Tavares when we met here at the ministry. We must ensure that all this is included in a project that will be measured at this table: there will certainly be another meeting in which conclusions will be drawn, which cannot be reached in a few hours".

Government: up to 8 car manufacturers interested in coming to Italy

“Even other manufacturers who do not yet have sites in Europe know that European politics is changing and therefore several car manufacturers without production sites in the EU are looking. Italy is a very attractive country because it is the only country with a single car manufacturer." Minister Urso said this at the end of the Stellantis table on Melfi with the unions. “I think the number of car manufacturers that have approached this ministry is now 6-7, even 8,” explained the minister.

Fiom: Stellantis irresponsible, no response on Melfi

“The company's behavior is socially irresponsible, today we have had no response regarding the Melfi plant, nor on the plant's guarantees regarding the putting into production of the 5 planned electric models, nor on the solutions that will concern the workers of the related industries and components manufacturers who risk losing their jobs". The leader of the said it Fiom, Michael DePalma, after the table at Mimit with Stellantis on the Melfi plant. “There will be next meetings but I think it is now clear that without the CEO (Tavares, ed) this discussion is going nowhere", underlined the union leader, asking Carlos Tavares to "come to Italy to respect the dignity of this country, the workers of this country and the industrial history of this country".

Uilm: among the 5 Stellantis models in Melfi there is also a hybrid

“We are satisfied with the confirmation of the five models by Stellantis in Melfi on the future medium platform, but we ask that part of these be hybrid since i full electric are struggling to establish themselves on the market. We also ask for protections for workers in related industries, i.e. in components, services and logistics, who in hindsight are the most exposed to occupational risks". They declare it Gianluca Ficco, national secretary Uilm sector manager auto, Vincenzo Tortorelli, general secretary of Uil Basilicata, e Marco Lomio, general secretary of Uilm Basilicata, at the end of the meeting at the ministry.
