Sustainability: Fs Italiane adheres to the Assisi Manifesto

The transport company adheres to the document created to support the development of a sustainable economy - CEO Battisti: "FS is responsible for how much its choices can affect people's quality of life"

The commitment of the big Italians on sustainability continues. This time it's time to move State Railways which after the two green bonds launched in 2017 and 2019 and the adhesion to the UN Global Compact has decided to adhere to the Manifesto of Assisi, a document that aims to eliminate the net contribution of greenhouse gas emissions by 2050, the same objective contained in the Green Deal of the EU Commission.

The manifesto, born for support the development of an economy on a human scale against the climate crisis and promoted by the Symbola Foundation, Confindustria, Coldiretti, the Enel Group, the Sacred Convent of Assisi, San Francesco Magazine, Novamont, will now also be able to count on the contribution of a big player in Italian industry such as Ferrovie.

However, anyone can decide to sign the document on the symbola.it website. To date, there are more than 2.000 members. The first meeting between the signatories – opened by University Minister Gaetano Manfredi – is scheduled for Friday 24 January.

"A truly sustainable approach is one in which decisions are made with a clear sense of perspective, not worrying only about short-term effects but projecting themselves into a wider horizon", commented Gianfranco Battisti, managing director and general manager of the Group. "FS Italiane, as a large industrial group in the transport sector, has the responsibility and awareness of how much its choices can affect people's quality of life and natural balances".

Sustainability, recalls the company, is one of the principles underlying the 2019-2023 Business Plan. Fs has also defined its long-term objectives (2030-2050) on the theme of sustainability: increase in the modal shift for passengers and goods towards sustainable mobility; increase to the highest levels of safety on the railway, road and motorway network; reduction of CO emissions2 to become carbon neutral by 2050.
