Smart working, only 3 out of 10 companies have secure systems

The Coronavirus forces many companies and many workers to so-called "smart working". An almost indispensable tool for applying this type of flexibility and autonomy is information technology. In Italy it is too often effective, but not efficient

Smart working, only 3 out of 10 companies have secure systems

Choice of spaces, times and tools to be used in the face of greater responsibility for results, this should be the paradigm of smart working at the time of Coronavirus, however – too often – it all boils down to work from homeusing home computer equipment.

This simplification, unfortunately, brings with it an aspect that concerns the corporate network security of all companies, from the largest to the smallest. There are those who have not been taken by surprise by the smartworking forced by the Coronavirus simply because it smart working it is not new as a working practice, but there are also those who, not only have become acquainted with this modality only now, but have had to equip themselves to ensure continuity of employment during this delicate phase. And the speech is true for i workers how much for i employers.

The efforts made by the companies, in general, have been sufficient, but for some realities, the too short blanket has been to the detriment of the security of the entire corporate network. Virtual private networks Impromptu (VPN) networks, inadequate equipment and insufficient protection mechanisms have left what was, in the past, an armored and efficient system vulnerable. From the photograph taken by Unioncamere out of the 18 companies that took the digital maturity test online through the digital business points (Pid), it emerged that almost 4 out of 10 Italian companies are equipped with cloud systems, a fundamental technology to ensure a more agile transition of the activities carried out to internal offices in "smart" mode, but only 3 out of 10 companies are equipped to protect connections remotely with cybersecurity tools necessary to guarantee security in data management.

They are in particular the Southern businesses the least technologically equipped to accommodate the new agile work organizational models: only 27% have a cloud and 17% have tools for the remote use of data in safety. While the most equipped appear the companies of Northwest for the use of cloud systems (40%) and those of the North East for the adoption of cybersecurity tools (37%). At the regional level, the companies of Trentino Alto Adige are the most structured to take up the challenge of "smart" work: 1 out of 2 declares that they have cloud systems and data protection for remote connections. Instead, the companies in Molise seem to be more in trouble due to the presence of the cloud, only 22% have these systems, and the Sicilian companies due to the use of anti hacker, just 13% say they use them.

The systems most at risk remain the "improvised" ones or even those which, for simplicity of use, are preferred to professional solutions. In these days of forced isolation, there are many workers who are using insecure connections through the use of remote control software, to reach the IT resources of their offices. Many are those who are exploiting solutions personal clouds to share files of all kinds with colleagues or customers. There are many computers left on in the workplace, but not properly protected, with the very intention of using systems Handcrafted VPNs to continue working remotely. Not to mention the PCs locked up in wardrobes which are now being used again, but without paying too much attention to that obsolete operating system which puts the privacy of all its customers.
