Tuscany has no rivals in the Slow Food Italy 2022 guide to extra virgin olive oils now in its 23rd edition. One hundred twenty-five collaborators, are not only expert tasters, but people present in the area, who know the companies from the olive grove to the bottle, have been unleashed all over the boot looking for companies and extra virgin olive oils that meet the fundamental requirements of the organization, i.e. healthy, clean and fair. A cross-section of the Italy of the gods came out best extra virgin olive oils, 750 companies including mills, farms and oil mills (120 novelties testifying to a very lively sector), 1.180 oils were reviewed among the more than 1.500 tasted. On a positive note, the growth in the number of companies that certify organic the entire supply chain (536 certified oils) and theincrease in producers (126 for 164 oils) they have joined the Slow Food Italian Extra Virgin Olive Oil Presidium, the project that promotes the environmental, landscape, health and economic value of the oil, which protects ancient olive groves, native cultivars and brings together producers who do not use synthetic fertilizers and chemical herbicides

The awards: with the Snail I have beenand indicate the companies (35) that stand out for the way they interpret production values ​​(sensory, territorial and environmental) in harmony with the Slow Food philosophy; with the Grande Olio (72) indicated the extra virgin olive oils that stood out for their particular qualities from an organoleptic point of view and because they well reflect the territory and cultivar. To these characteristics, the prize Grande Olio Slow (107) adds recognition dedicated to agronomic practices nounenables applied.

There is an increase in organic producers and companies that promote environmental and health values

As previously mentioned the Tuscany takes the lion's share and certifies its companies on the first podium of all three classifications. Followed for Snails from Campania and Sicily. In the ranking Grandi Oli Sicily leaps into second position followed by Puglia and Lazio. in Grandi Oli Show in second position are ex aequo Marche, Sicily and Campania.

To these recognitions is added the special prize dedicated to the memory of Diego Soracco, active leader of Slow Food since its origins which does not go to an oil, but to the idea and action of Nicola Solinas, owner of the Masoni Becciu company and producer of the Presidium of extra virgin olive oil, which to help the olive growers affected by the disaster of the fires which, last summer, in Sardinia destroyed a large part of the Montiferru olive-growing heritage, immediately set about raising funds and activated the nurseries of the area to donate olive trees to injured people.

Finally, three special mentions, a new section of the Guide, in collaboration with BioDea, which rewards oils united by the objective of safeguarding biodiversity and at the same time creating quality products, even in difficult, sometimes extreme conditions.

For 2022 the awards have been given to theDiodoros oil fruit of the recovery project started inside the Archaeological Park of the Valley of the Temples (Agrigento) managed by the Val Paradiso company (ancient olive trees minor variety the Piricuddara which increase the beauty of this archaeological site); to the Rosciola monovarietal oil from the Oro delle Donne company in Marino (Rome) as an example of attention to olive biodiversity that each territory can express excellent results with its own cultivars; Lavra, varietal oil produced in Cellina di Nardò by the Caliandro company and the result of the daily fight against Xylella which, here, is fought with natural methods.
