Six Italian restaurants among the top 50 in the world, but the no. 1 is the Geranium in Copenhagen

Six Italian restaurants have entered the prestigious list of the World's 50 Best Restaurants 2022. The Oscar-like awards ceremony in the field of world-class catering took place in London's historic Old Billingsgate and saw the absolute podium the Geranium of Copenhagen – led by chef Rasmus Kofoed and by the sommelier Søren Ledet who in the last edition of the World's 50 had placed second behind the legendary «Noma» by Rene Redzepi who had already conquered this record in 2010, 2011, 2012 and 2014.

For the record the demonstration was supposed to take place in Moscow, but following the aggression of Ukraine on the part of Russia it was decided to move everything to Old Billingsgate, the ancient fish market of the English capital, overlooking the Thames. Also, Russian restaurants were dropped from the rankings.

Italy has managed in this edition to bring home a more than brilliant result that is already worth a record: six restaurants made the exclusive list of the 50 best restaurants with Riccardo Camanini of the "Lido 84" of Gardone Riviera who climbed to 8th position after conquering 2021th in 15 and 2019th in 78; with Massimiliano Alajmo of «Le Calandre» in Rubano which rose to 10th position from the 26th of the last edition; with Mauro Uliassi in Senigallia, jumped from 51st to 12th place; with Niko Romito three steps down in 15th position from the fifty-first obtained last year; with "Piazza Duomo" by Enrico Crippa, in 19th position (in the last edition he had managed to pass from 29th to 18th, therefore, despite going down one step, he was still firmly anchored at the top of the world rankings; with Norbert Niederkofler of the «St. Hubertus» of San Cassiano, in the province of Bolzano, which made another exceptional leap from 54th to 29th position.

And yet another great achievement for Italy appears in the rankings  «Hall of fame» the Top of the Top of historic restaurants of past editions The only Italian on this list is Massimo Bottura, chef of «Osteria Francescana» in Modena which sits next to ElBulli by Ferran Adrià, El Cellar de Can Roca by the Roca brothers, Eleven Madison Park, The Fat Duck by Heston Blumenthal, The French Laundry by Thomas Keller, Mirazur by Mauro Colagreco.

The big news this year is emergence in the top positions of the World's 50 Best Restaurants 2022 of restaurants from Hispanic and Lusitanian-speaking countries, who have dominated the palmares from second to seventh position.

For lovers of numbers it can be noted that 14 restaurants are from Asia, 13 from Europe, 11 from North America, 7 from South America, 2 from the Middle East, 2 from Africa and one from Oceania.

The awarding of the prizes of the World's 50 Best Restaurants 2022 which celebrates 20 years of activity this year is decided by 1080 experts from 27 strictly anonymous countries in which gender equality is ensured, 540 women and 540 men, divided as follows 34% chef and restaurateurs, 33% gastronomes who write about food and 34% food and wine experts with experience in the sector.
