Restaurants: getting out of the crisis with Dining Bonds

The idea was launched in New York but is also gaining support in Italy: the locals are asking their most loyal customers for help, to be able to start again when possible.

Restaurants: getting out of the crisis with Dining Bonds

When the coronavirus emergency is over, we will have to start again. And while governments are discussing coronabonds and other tools to support companies in difficulty and citizens, one of the sectors most affected by the restrictive measures, the restaurant industry, is already organizing itself. The idea was launched in New York (the new world outbreak, which according to some could become the new Wuhan and the new Bergamo), where through the platform supportrestaurants.org it is possible to subscribe to the so-called "Dining bonds", purchase bonds which, in most cases, exceed the nominal value of the proposed service, thus inviting the consumer to support the recovery of their trusted premises when it will be possible to leave again.

The initiative is based on the well-known gift card system and has traveled around the world, even arriving in Italy. There isn't yet a similar digital platform here, but individual actions are flocking. Some examples are listed on the Gambero Rosso website: Giuseppe Iannotti, patron chef of Kresios of Telese Terme: his dining bond it does not provide a "discount" on the final price, but invites you to give away (and treat yourself) to a tasting journey (Mr. Pink- or Mr. White+) at the Campania restaurant through the purchase of a voucher valid until December 30, 2021. " Give us a gift, we will give it to you. It's a way to plan the future”, reads the invitation to support one of the most avant-garde kitchens in Italy.

In Verona, on the other hand, there is Buns, a "burger lovers club" in business since 2014, near the Ponte Pietra district: the Buns dining bond it works like the previous ones, starting from a minimum purchase of 30 euros. In Milan, Andrea Berton proposes a more convivial idea: “Buy a dinner for one person today, to be able to eat tomorrow for two”. Cost of the voucher 150 euros (aperitif and tasting menu for two), to be spent by 20 December 2020. And always in the North, Alessandro Dal Degan promotes a bond that can be purchased until 31 May to be used for a dinner at La Tana Gourmet in Asiago by on 31 December 2021 (free selection of Gesmakh products).

The idea reached the historic center of the capital. In Rome in via dei Giubbonari, there is the Salumeria Roscioli, known throughout the world: on the Cosaporto platform, the restaurant offers "the dinner that will come", 75 euro bonds that become 100 in value to enjoy a dinner by 1 April 2021. In Trastevere, however, the small laboratory with Maritozzo Rosso cuisine, proceeds with the motto of #adottaunristorante : until April 20th you buy a voucher online worth 50 euros for two people, with a 25% discount on the value of the meal (25 euros per person instead of 34).

But there are also, in no particular order, the Fanfa Dining Bonds of the Le Fanfaron bistro in Turin (35 euro spending for a bond with a face value of 50, which can be spent until 30 September 2020), the sushi-themed bond by Moi Omakase, in Prato (17-tasting omakase menu, 70 euros), the offers of Tablinum in Desenzano del Garda, the solidarity bond of Osteria Partenope in Naples (60 euro voucher for a dinner for 2, 20 euro will be donated to the Colli di Cotugno hospital), the dining bonds of the Old Friend Bar and Bistrot in Cagliari, for 50, 75 and 100 euro, with a value of 20 % more, expendable until December 2022.
