Rfi (FS Group): public debate under way for two railway lines

An Italy increasingly connected by rail. The process has been initiated public debate for two strategic works under commissioner management and included in the National Recovery and Resilience Plan. This is lot 1a Battipaglia-Romagnano of the new railway line Salerno-Reggio Calabria (known as the Mediterranean motorway) and interconnection with the existing Battipaglia-Potenza line and the doubling between Genga and Serra San Quirico on the line Orte-Falconara (Rome-Ancona). The Italian FS Group gave the news.

The debate has the purpose of presenting the projects to the public, collecting observations and proposals in order to allow the proposer of the work - in this case Italian Railway Network of the FS Italiane Group - to evaluate and make any changes to the projects. As regards the timing of the public debate, for the works included in the Pnrr they are very stringent: 15 days for the planning of the public debate starting from the appointment of the coordinator; 45 natural and consecutive days for the debate to take place, 15 days for the presentation of the final report by the coordinator of the public debate.

Returning to the two projects, the interventions to upgrade the Salerno-Reggio Calabria railway network will allow for a reduction in travel times and greater accessibility to the Rail system. For the construction of the work, the Ministry of Infrastructure and Sustainable Mobility has appointed the CEO and general manager of Rfi, Vera Fiorani, as extraordinary commissioner.

Instead, the main objective of the interventions on the Orte-Falconara line is to enhance passenger connections between the Tyrrhenian regions and those on the Adriatic coast. The project is also functional for the creation of an alternative freight route for north-south connections. Already with the first phase of infrastructural and technological interventions it will be possible to recover up to about 20 minutes between Rome and Ancona. For the construction of the work, the Ministry of Infrastructure and Sustainable Mobility has appointed Rfi's investment director, Vincenzo Macello, as extraordinary commissioner.

The projects were also sent to the Higher Council of Public Works for assessments of competence.
