Lega Referendum: the Consulta rejected it

The referendum proposed by the League will not take place. The Constitutional Court declared it inadmissible because it was "excessively manipulative". The question posed by the party led by Matteo Salvini aimed to repeal the rules on the proportional distribution of seats provided for by the current law and transform the system into a pure majority. The risk of early elections and an en plein of the League and the Center Right in Parliament is receding, while in Parliament the government has presented a proposal for a new electoral law - the so-called Germanicum – with proportional system and threshold of 5%.

The referendum question had been proposed by eight regional councils (of Veneto, Piedmont, Lombardy, Friuli Venezia Giulia, Sardinia, Abruzzo, Basilicata and Liguria), all led by the centre-right.

The reasons with which the Consulta - in its first important pronouncement since Marta Cantabila became president - rejected the League's request are that by repealing the rules, in fact, it would have become impossible to vote immediately with the "mutilated" and essentially inapplicable. In fact, in order to be able to use it without distorting the will of the voters, it would have been essential to put a hand on the electoral colleges, adapting them to the new pure majority model. Which would have blocked Parliament.

“It's a shame, it's the old system that defends itself: pd and 5stelle are and remain attached to the seats. We are sorry that the people cannot be decided: this is the return to the prehistory of the worst Italian politics”, protests Matteo Salvini.
