Protectionism: opportunities for Made in Italy from the new EU agreements

In recent years, the theme of protectionism has made a comeback: in fact, over 8 discriminatory measures have been introduced globally from November 2008 to June 2017. Among the most damaged sectors are automotive, metallurgy and instrumental mechanics, segments that account for almost 40% of the total exported from Italy.

The G20 countries are "responsible" for more than two thirds of the measures implemented, with the United States at the forefront. Since taking office, the new US administration has "dropped the trio": it withdrew from the TPP, introduced a large number of discriminatory measures and started the renegotiation of NAFTA.

Renegotiation, and not cancellation, as announced in the last electoral campaign. The importance of the agreement, which supported over 1 million jobs in the United States in 2015, has prompted the United States to focus on the modernization of the treaty also considering the strong synergies that have consolidated over time on the side of trade , production chains and business competitiveness.

While the new American administration is putting up walls, the European Union is promoting free trade by aiming to eliminate most of the duties weighing on the products of our companies: it has in fact signed an agreement with Canada, is close to concluding one with Japan and is negotiating new ones with other important partner countries.

Many opportunities are opening up for Italian companies, also together with SACE SIMEST, as done in Mexico by Eurotranciatura (a total commitment of over 19 million euros) and in Japan by MooRER (financing of more than 2 million euros) .
