Cilento wine producer renounces the DOP brand: too much bureaucracy

The producer De Conciliis renounces the protected designation of origin. His wine had been rejected on the eve of bottling; then, after the operation, the defects disappeared but it was too late. The company had already made its decision. "A very serious fact" commented Vittorio Sangiorgio, president of Coldiretti of Salerno.

Cilento wine producer renounces the DOP brand: too much bureaucracy

It's the fault of too much bureaucracy. A Cilento wine renounces the PDO mark due to excessive certification problems. The company in question is called De Conciliis and the first wine that was removed from the protected designation of origin is the Aglianico "Donnaluna".

"In the future we will continue to send drops of Cilento to the world - the company said - even if we will no longer be able to write Cilento on our labels, depriving the English, American and Japanese consumers who today consume two thirds of the wine we produce between the wine and its land. One of the best vintages of this wine was rejected, just on the eve of bottling, by the certification body due to serious biological defects. The chemical examination of the wine had not shown any anomaly. We are certain that the cause of the first rejection lies in the sampling, conservation or transport method of the sample: however we cannot wait for the time for a review by the commission, we entrust this wine to the judgment of consumers who have been rewarding us for three decades now by electing it as a symbol of Cilento winemaking renaissance”. After bottling, the defects had disappeared but the company had already made its decision.

The producer is considering downgrading all production to DOP for this year and for the years to come. "The decision of the De Conciliis winemakers to give up the PDO denomination is very serious for the Salerno wine sector and risks creating a chain effect on the whole sector - said Vittorio Sangiorgio, president of Coldiretti of Salerno - it is not possible that bureaucracy influences and thus penalize a segment of the economy which is a driving force for the market and for exports”.
