One hundred thousand passports in just one year. Poste Italiane reaches a symbolic milestone This marks the success of the issuing and renewal service at post offices. From experiment to record numbers
Il service started in March 2024 thanks to the agreement with the Ministry of the Interior and Mimit, with the aim of to ease the workload of the State Police and bring public administration closer to citizens. The first stage, municipalities with fewer than 15 inhabitants, included in the Polis project. Then, it will be extended to the provincial capitals. Today There are 2.305 active branches in small towns and 415 in large cities, from Milan to Naples, from Rome to Cagliari.
The territories that responded best
La the province of Verona leads the ranking with over 9 passports issued, followed by Vicenza (8.800), Monza (5.700), and Bologna (5.300). The most productive office is San Pietro in Casale, in the Bologna area, which has exceeded 560 documents. At the other end of the scale is Carapelle Calvisio, in the L'Aquila area, with just 78 inhabitants but several passports already issued.
Fewer kilometers and less waiting
The project is also measured in terms of accessibilityIn Terranova di Pollino, Basilicata, residents used to have to travel up to 150 kilometers to obtain a document. Now, they simply go to the local post office. Waiting times are shorter, and passports can even be delivered to their homes: a choice favored by 79% of residents of small towns, while in cities, the percentage drops to 33%.

La procedures Applying for a passport at the post office is simple: ID, tax code, two photos, a 42,50 euro payment slip, and a 73,50 euro revenue stamp.
For renewals, you must also submit your old passport or the loss report. The operator will collect your biometric data and forward it to the police. In large cities, you must book online on the Poste Italiane website.
