Italian ports targeted by the Chinese

The Chinese want to take root in the Mediterranean ports and in particular in the Italian ones. The Chinese state group Cosco, which is third in the world in container transport and which already owns the port of Piraeus and 40% of the logistics platform of Vado Ligure, is exploring the possibility, according to the financial newspaper Mf, to acquire other port structures in Italy.

The operation is part of the Belt Road Initiative or Silk Road. The Gentiloni government welcomes the arrival of the Chinese but wants to first define the rules of engagement and study the best way to enhance our ports. For this reason, an inter-ministerial task force was set up in recent days which includes technicians from the ministries of Infrastructure, Economy, Foreign Affairs and Territorial Cohesion.

The Government aims to develop dialogue and reach an advantageous understanding with the Chinese within the framework of a collaboration between Italy and China which is intensifying and which can find one of its strengths in logistics.
