Open Fiber: optical fiber arrives in Battipaglia

Battipaglia is preparing for a digital revolution. In the municipality, in the province of Salerno in Campania - a well-known center of Italian agricultural production - the works of Open Fiber have started for the construction of an optical fiber telecommunications network. The investment includes 5 million euro, own funds needed to wiring of 15 building units.

A state-of-the-art infrastructure capable of providing citizens and businesses with the latest generation network created in FTTH mode (Fibre To The Home). The only one capable of returning connection speeds up to 1 Gigabit per second and latency of less than 5 milliseconds. The agreement was sealed by the mayor Cecilia Francese and the councilor Davide Bruno together with the representatives of Open Fiber Gianfranco Guerrera, Vincenzo Fabaro and Luigi Lambiase.

In order to limit the impact and any inconvenience to the community as much as possible, the project outlined for Battipaglia provides for the reuse of existing infrastructure: of the 101 km that will form the new and widespread ultra-broadband telecommunications network, 42 km will consist of underground or aerial systems already present in the city.

Furthermore, as in the construction sites open throughout Italy, the excavations will be carried out in full respect for the environment and favoring innovative methodologies. Among these, the most used is the minétrench: the excavation on the road, 10 cm wide and 35 to 50 cm deep, filled with pink cement mortar when laying the cables. After at least 30 days (time required for the material to settle) the intervention is defined with the scarification of the roadway involved in the hot asphalt house.

Each phase is the result of coordination between the company led by Elisabetta Ripa and the competent municipal offices. Overall they will be stretched out 9 thousand km of fiber optic cables, with completion of the works expected within 18 months.

Alongside the intervention guaranteed by private funds, coverage of the peripheral and rural areas of Battipaglia is also envisaged, thanks to the Ultra broadband plan. In this case the infrastructure is financed with regional and state funds and will remain in public ownership. The activities entrusted to Open Fiber under concession are coordinated by Infratel, an "in house" company of the Ministry of Economic Development, under the supervision of the Campania Region.

“An ultra-broadband network, entirely in optical fiber – he highlighted Gianfranco Guerrera, regional manager Campania and Basilicata of Open Fiber - allows you to enable services that benefit the entire community: smart working, telemedicine, teleworking, distance education, industry 4.0, video surveillance, demotics and much more to invent".
