Appointments of public managers: today the Government list, the focus is on gender equality

It's the day of truth for the appointments of public managers. This evening, with the markets closed, the Government will communicate the new names of those who will sit at the top of the most important state-owned companies in the coming years. And in these hours the bets multiply.

“We are ready for Enel, Eni and Finmeccanica, whose top management is now expiring – said Graziano Delrio, undersecretary to the Prime Minister, in an interview with Repubblica -. Renzi also wants to do the post office, to give the signal of a government that immediately tackles the knots. The desire is to propose new faces, but what we are trying to do is not generational destruction. It is rather a cultural revolution. For this reason, we aim to promote women, up to a substantial gender equality in the appointments. We do this to fill an Italian gap which is at least 30 years compared to other countries".

As for the criteria used, the Executive has hinted that all directors with at least three mandates behind them will be replaced (even if there is no rule in this sense). Based on this principle, Paolo Scaroni (Eni), Fulvio Conti (Enel), Flavio Cattaneo (Terna) and Massimo Sarmi (Poste) should say goodbye to the armchair.

Furthermore, the Saccomanni directive of 24 June 2013 establishes among the requirements for eligibility "the absence of conflicts of interest also with reference to any positions in competing companies". A criterion that seems to hinder the candidacies of Emma Marcegaglia and Paola Severino, whose names had been hypothesized for both Enel and Eni: the former number one of Confindustria and the former Minister of Justice, in fact, respectively lead a steel company and a law firm that have relationships with both energy giants. For the position of managing director of Eni and Enel, the insiders Claudio Descalzi and Francesco Starace remain the favourites.

According to the latest rumors, among the women Renzi would like to nominate is Patrizia Grieco, president of Olivetti, who could go to the presidency of Poste, if not in Enel or Terna. The new CEO of Poste could be Francesco Caio, who however remains a candidate for Terna too, together with Aldo Chiarini of Gaz de France Italia and Domenico Arcuri, CEO of Invitalia, who in turn would aim to become CEO of Finmeccanica, but Giuseppe Giordo of Alenia seems to have the advantage. Instead, Gianni De Gennaro should be confirmed as chairman of the defense group.
