Cannabis made in Italy arrives in pharmacies

Starting in October, patients with a prescription will be able to buy cannabis produced by the Italian state for therapeutic purposes in pharmacies – a novelty that will facilitate access to treatment for many patients, reducing costs.

Starting from the month of October, patients in possession of a medical prescription will be able to buy cannabis produced by the Italian state for therapeutic purposes in pharmacies.

In the next few days, the first 1600 jars containing 5 grams of each product will arrive, the fruit of the first harvest from the military pharmaceutical chemical plant in Florence, which took care of the cultivation starting from 120 cuttings supplied by the Crea research center in Rovigo.

All that is missing is the signing of the agreement from the Ministry of Health, which should arrive in days and then the shipment will start to hospitals and pharmacies that will present a specific request.

A novelty that arouses the interest of many Italian patients, for whom it will be easier and cheaper to access the marijuana-based pain relief therapies. From HIV patients to cancer patients, passing through those suffering from ALS and multiple sclerosis, there are many subjects who will be able to benefit from cannabis made in Italy. A product containing two active ingredients: 5-6% of Thc (tetrahydrocannabinol) and as much of Cbd (cannabidiol).

We recall that, at present, there are thirteen Regions that over the years have approved laws that allow the use of cannabis-based medicines for therapeutic purposes: Piedmont, Liguria, Lombardy, Veneto, Friuli Venezia Giulia, Emilia-Romagna, Tuscany, Umbria, Abruzzo, Marche, Puglia, Basilicata and Sicily. In some of them, the treatment is paid for by the Regional Health Services, while in others it must be paid in full by the patient. Precisely for this reason, Italian production becomes important, reducing import costs from Holland.

In any case, imports will continue to be carried out in the coming months, at least until Italian cultivation reaches full capacity, producing about 100 kg of product a year and covering the entire national requirement.
