Istat: inflation is rising again

In October, consumer prices in Italy rose by 0,1% both compared to September and compared to October 2013. This was communicated by Istat, recalling that in September the trend rate was -0,2%. Inflation acquired for 2014 thus rises to 0,3% from 0,2% in September.

The recovery in inflation, reports Istat, is mainly due to the downsizing of the tendential declines in the prices of regulated energy goods (-2,6% from -6,6% in September) and services relating to communications (-1% from -5,6% in September). The monthly rise in the general index mainly depends on the increases in the prices of natural gas (+4,6%) and electricity (+1,6%). This rise was contained by the cyclical declines in the prices of unregulated energy (-0,9%) and transport-related services (-0,7%).

Istat reports that on a cyclical basis, above all, the prices of housing, water and electricity (+1,2%) and education (+1,1% over September) increased. Compared to October 2013, the prices of education (-1,8%), of hospitality and restaurant services (+0,7%) and of furniture and services for the home (+0,6%) run compared to the average. Communications prices increased by 0,4% in October compared to September but decreased by 3,5% compared to October 2013.

The figure rose most markedly in the eurozone, where October inflation rose to 0,4% in October 2014, higher than 0,3% in September, according to Eurostat's flash estimate, the office statistician of the European Union.
