Istat: inflation slows down in January (3,2%), but the shopping cart flies (+4,2%)

The prices of the most frequently purchased products have risen by 4,2% on an annual basis – In general terms, however, inflation has slowed down slightly to 3,2%.

In January, inflation in Italy reached 3,2%, slowing down slightly from the 3,3% recorded in December. The figure, released today by Istat, remains at high levels. But narrowing the gaze to the "shopping cart“, the prices of the most frequently purchased products have suffered a surge: in January the increase was 0,8% on a monthly basis e by 4,2% on an annual basis (+4,3% in December).

THEacquired inflation for 2012 it is equal to 1,6%, while that basically, calculated net of energy goods and fresh food, drops to 2,3% from 2,4% in December 2011. Net of energy goods alone, the trend growth rate of the consumer price index drops to 2,2. 2,3% (it was +XNUMX% in December).

The slight slowdown in inflation in general terms - Istat explained - derives from the slight increase in the trend growth rate of goods prices (+3,9%, from +3,8% in December 2011), more than offset by the decline in services (+2,3%, from +2,5% in the previous month). The harmonized index of consumer prices (Ipca) decreased by 1,8% on a monthly basis and increased by 3,4% on an annual basis, down by three tenths of a point compared to December 2011 (+3,7%) .
