Istat: incomes and confidence are increasing in Italy, but strong inequalities remain

Italians are better off economically and have more faith in the future, but the recovery does not come to everyone and inequalities in our country are still very strong. This is the picture that emerges from the third edition of the Equitable and Sustainable Welfare Report (BES) published this morning by Istat. The study refers to 2014.

“After the great storm of 2013 and the critical issues since 2008 – comments Linda Laura Sabbadini, central director of Istat – 2014 is a year of transition. The fall stops and there are even signs of improvement. Social networks, which have been an important reference in the crisis, are improving”.

From the 24% of people over 14 who in 2013 believed that his own situation would improve in the following 5 years, states the document, it rose to 27% in 2014. The report records an increase in satisfaction with leisure time, from 63% to 64,6%, and in that with the economic condition, from 40,1% to 43,4 .XNUMX%. Despite the increased optimism, Italians are still cautious about being satisfied with their lives. L'satisfaction index it had a sharp drop in 2012, when it fell from 100 to 89,1, and has been stable for two years at 89.

Furthermore, according to Istat, the disposable income (by 0,7% in 2013 and 0,1% in 2014), but the inequalities in distribution: the ratio between the income owned by the 20% of the population with the highest incomes and the 20% with the lowest incomes reaches 5,8, from 5,1.

Il South, in addition to having a decidedly lower average disposable income than the North and Center, it also has the most accentuated income inequality: the income possessed by 20% of the population with the highest incomes is 6,7 times that possessed by the 20% with incomes lower, while in the North the ratio is 4,6

“Between North and South there is a specular situation - continues Sabbadini -, in particular with respect to work and safety: the South is at the lowest levels and with a worse dynamics for work, and the gap has increased in recent years, both in terms of quality and quantity of work. And then there is also the problem of safety. And yet, although the country has not yet freed itself from the crisis, optimism towards the future grows in 2014, especially among young people, despite being the segment most affected by the recession”.
