Istat: employment down in April, wages +2,9%

According to the Statistical Institute, gross of employees on layoffs, the figure marks a slight contraction (-0,1%) compared to the month of March – On an annual basis the decrease is 0,7%.

Falling employment and rising wages in large Italian companies. In April – according to Istat data – employment in large companies gross of employees on redundancy fund (Cig) marks (in seasonally adjusted terms) a decrease of 0,1% compared to March. Net of Cig employees, there is no change.

In comparison with April 2011, employment in large companies decreased by 0,7% gross and by 1,2% net of Cig employees. Net of calendar effects, there was a decrease, compared to April 2011, of 2,6% in the number of hours worked per employee (net of employees in Cig).

In the same month, the gross wage per hour worked (seasonally adjusted data) recorded an increase of 2,9% compared to the previous month. In trend terms, the raw index increases by 5,3%. Compared to April 2011, the gross salary per employee (net of Cig employees) decreased by 0,1%, while labor costs increased by 0,1%.

The redundancy fund used in April amounted to 35,9 hours for every thousand hours worked, with a tendential increase of 4,8 hours for every thousand hours worked.

In industry, large companies used 82,7 hours of Cig per thousand hours worked in April, with an increase of 9,8 hours compared to the same month in 2011. Large service companies used 10,6 hours of Cig per one thousand hours worked; compared to April 2011 there was an increase of 2,6 hours.

The number of strike hours worked in April amounted to 2,6 per thousand hours worked, with an increase of 1,4 hours compared to the same month of the previous year.

In large industrial companies, the strike hours performed in April amounted to 4,8 per thousand hours worked, with an increase of 4,1 hours compared to April 2011. In the service sector, the hours of strike performed amounted to 1,4 per thousand hours worked, with no change compared to the previous year.
