Hyperloop, the supersonic train: Rome-Milan in half an hour

The train, traveling at the speed of sound (about 1.200 km/h), will connect Cleveland and Chicago in 28 minutes – The startup was created by the Italian Bibop G. Gresta, one of the founders of Digital Magics, and is controlled by the company Jumpstarter , which is part of the incubator's portfolio – The train is highly sustainable: self-sufficient in terms of energy, it produces more electricity than it consumes.

Hyperloop, the supersonic train: Rome-Milan in half an hour

Hyperloop Transportation Technologies, founded by the Italian Bibop G. Gresta and the German Dirk Ahlborn e 100% owned by Jumpstarter, owned by Digital Magics, has signed official agreements with the Northeast Ohio Coordination Agency, transportation and environmental planning agency and the Illinois Department of Transportation, to begin the feasibility study to create the first interstate connection of the super-fast Hyperloop train in the United States.

The supersonic train (a magnetic levitation capsule inside a low pressure tube) will connect Chicago, the largest city in Illinois and Cleveland, the administrative capital of the state of Ohio, traveling over 500 km in 28 minutes and traveling at the speed of sound, approximately 1.200 km per hour.

The startup Hyperloop TT is based in Los Angeles and speaks a lot of Italian: one of the co-founders is Italian and above all the company is controlled by a subsidiary of Digital Magics, i.e. the most important “Made in Italy” digital startup incubator active throughout the Italian territory (which has Bibop G. Gresta among its founders).

In January, Hyperloop TT worked with a group of congressional representatives from several states, including Illinois, Ohio, Pennsylvania and Wisconsin, on a letter to President Donald Trump requesting financial support infrastructure to develop the system.

Bibop G. Gresta, co-founder and president of Hyperloop Transportation Technologies, said: “These agreements mark a historic moment for HyperloopTT. For the first time, a US state is investing in our technology. It is the first big step towards a technological revolution that will change the way of conceiving transport”.

Gabriele Ronchini, founder and CEO of Digital Magics, instead said: "The statement 'innovation is our future' has never been truer when it comes to Hyperloop. In just 5 years, more than 800 people work for this visionary project all over the world. HyperloopTT has produced 27 patents, signed 8 government agreements in advanced stages of negotiation and over 40 partnerships for the development of the technology”.

HOW THE HYPERLOOP TRAIN WORKS

The Hyperloop project is a capsule that hovers suspended inside a low-pressure tube. As with an aircraft at high altitude, the capsule encounters less resistance. The remaining air in front of the capsule is conveyed towards the back of the tube using a compressor, which allows incredible speeds to be reached up to over 1.200 km/h and with very little electricity consumption.

The system was designed with i highest standards of sustainability, in order to have a minimum impact on the ground. The entire pipe system is in fact built on pylons, in order to reduce land acquisition costs and ensure insulation from climatic and environmental conditions.

The design of the pylons is such as to make the structure earthquake proof as well energy self-sufficient. Thanks to the solar panels placed along the entire upper part of the tubes and thanks to a sophisticated energy recovery system, Hyperloop is capable of producing more electricity than it consumes.

  1. It is impossible to produce more energy than it consumes, it is the second law of thermodynamics, and the reality of entropy. I think it means that the solar panels offset the power consumption of the Hyperloop to the maximum.
