Government: vote of confidence, a proof of weakness

It will be held tonight in the Senate - The opposition protests against the majority decision - This replies that the vote of confidence is imposed by the need to act quickly - But in the meantime the third pole and Pisanu are inviting Berlusconi to take a step back - In the PDL and in the Lega there are still strong signs of intolerance.

Government: vote of confidence, a proof of weakness

In the end, doing quickly prevails over doing together. And so the government, which is aiming to have the yes of the Senate for tonight, has placed its trust in theyet another draft of the maneuver (VAT rising by one point, solidarity contribution for incomes above 300 thousand euros and raising the retirement age of women, but since 2014).

In this way the Executive manages to keep the majority united once again, but loses more and more contact with the centrist area which (also thanks to Pisanu's support) demands in no uncertain terms a new government and a new premier. After all, the most politically relevant news of yesterday was the meeting of the third pole which defined, in a harsh communiqué, "a further improvised adjustment" the new measures that will be contained in the maxi-amendment on which confidence will be voted, and asked for "a discontinuity of the Government which is part of Italy's lack of credibility".

In turn, the former Interior Minister Beppe Pisanu, in an interview, asks that Berlusconi resign in the interests of the country and Casini repeats that a government of national unity is needed to avoid the abyss. The wrath of the Democratic Party is discounted, which protests that by placing its trust, the Government and the majority have contradicted each other, while Di Pietro speaks of an Executive, now "powerless and desperate". In the meantime, the majority explains that they have placed their trust because the need to act quickly, also enforced by authoritative impartial interventions as well as by the markets, did not allow for anything else. But the impression remains that this move is above all the only one that made it possible to still hold together a majority that was showing visible signs of intolerance and disintegration, so much so that as many as four (some even count five) versions of the maneuver to bring to Parliament.

Today he will certainly hold the majority and the Northern League Bricolo has said he is in favor of the request for trust. But until when? The questions all remain. With a League that seems to be in great difficulty, after the results of the local elections in the North and with a base that is now openly criticizing the leadership group, to the point that it is legitimate to ask to what extent Bossi still has control of the party. And above all with a PDL in which neither Berlusconi nor the secretary Alfano seemed able to contain the heavy dissatisfaction with the maneuver (but not only) of large sectors of the party, from Formigoni to Alemanno to Antonio Martino's liberals. In short: there will be parliamentary trust, but the autumn of the PDL and the League promises to be hot and agitated.
