Lega-M5S government with Savona (but not the Treasury) or elections

Political crisis at the crossroads: Di Maio mends with Mattarella and proposes to relaunch the Lega-M5S government by moving Savona to a ministry other than the Treasury - Salvini remains perplexed and would prefer technical trust in Cottarelli, whose government remains on standby, but does not closes the door to a political agreement in extremis with Conte or Giorgetti premier

Lega-M5S government with Savona (but not the Treasury) or elections

Three months after the elections of 4 March, there is not just one government on the horizon but even two. One technical and one political. The first led by Carlo Cottarelli for two days on standby waiting to figure out whether to enter the field or give way to a political government and the second, if ever born, led by the revived Giuseppe Conte or by the Northern League Giancarlo Giorgetti (candidable, however, also for the Treasury). This is the situation in which yet another day of political crisis opens which could be decisive but perhaps not.

The political puzzle still stands. By abjuring the delusional request for impeachment, the leader of the Five Stars, Luigi Di Maio, worried about the frond that is beginning to grow in his group and the decline in electoral consensus due to the inconclusiveness of the government negotiations, has made another turnaround and yesterday he went up to Colle to reconcile with the President of the Republic, Sergio Mattarella, and inform him that he is ready to try the last card to form a political government on the Lega-Cinque Stelle axis. Di Maio would like the premiership for Professor Conte but is willing to hand it over to the Northern League Giorgetti in exchange for Paolo Savona's resignation as Economy Minister, who would be rewarded with another ministry.

But Salvini, who prefers to keep his hands free to capitalize on the consensus gathered in the next elections, first rejected the offer and then opened a window by saying he would think about it. In reality, Salvini's favorite idea is another, namely that of shelving the political government and allowing the birth of the technical Cottarelli government, which should arise from the technical trust that in Parliament would be granted to him by the League and by the other political and which would have the sole task of bringing Italy back to the polls as soon as possible but after July, i.e. in September.

Barring new somersaults and new twists, the Lega-M5S political agreement extended to the Brothers of Italy remains difficult but returns to the field even if President Mattarella keeps the reserve card of the technical government led by Carlo Cottarelli and the consequent return in elections in September. The prime minister in charge has already had the list of technical ministers ready for two days and is waiting for political developments to understand whether he should enter the field or not.

In this absurd comedy on the skin of the country, the next few hours could therefore be the decisive ones but it is a prediction repeated too often and too often disappointed. We will soon see if this time it will be the right time for the birth of the first and perhaps only government of a legislature born badly and destined to close after a few months.
