Government: Lega and Five Stars, hunting for the premier

After a Sunday of negotiations, Salvini and Di Maio promise to bring the outcome of their talks to the President of the Republic, Mattarella, today but they have yet to close the agreement on the program and above all indicate a candidate for prime minister: technician or politician?

Government: Lega and Five Stars, hunting for the premier

Matteo Salvini and Luigi Di Maio have in store secret and in some ways surprising candidates for Palazzo Chigi, but they don't reveal their cards. For two reasons: first because they have yet to reach an agreement between themselves and then because they know that the last word belongs to the Head of State, Sergio Mattarella, who will not make discounts on the matter and will demand reliable profiles at European and international level.

After a Sunday of negotiations in Milan, the two leaders called the Quirinale yesterday, warning the Secretary General, Zampetti, that they were ready to report the outcome of the negotiations for the formation of the Government ad horas to President Mattarella.

But the puzzle of puzzles concerns the candidacy of the premier. Will it be technical or political? IERI (Yesterday) Di Maio, who has not yet lost hope of reaching Palazzo Chigi, even at the cost of major sacrifices on the distribution of ministries and on the programme, has stated in no uncertain terms that the candidate will be a politician. But such a choice collides with vetoes and countervetos, because neither Lega nor Cinque Stelle want to give in and the Lega immediately opposed the Di Maio hypothesis with that of Giancarlo Giorgetti, Salvini's right arm.

This is why it is by no means obvious that the candidate is really a politician and yesterday we went back to the track of high-ranking technicians, even if among the names circulating over the days someone has already slipped away like the former Rector of Bocconi, Guido Scoreboards. But above all, the League continued its highly confidential polls yesterday which could prove to be decisive in the next few hours. The real technical candidates still on track are no more than a couple.

If Salvini and Di Maio find the square on the premier together with the President of the Republic, the Lega-Cinque Stelle government could be born quickly, but the unknowns remain. They remain on the figure of the premier and remain, to a lesser extent, on the program which is defined in the guidelines but still requires insights into some key steps.

Today could therefore prove to be crucial: either the Government immediately or a possible other round of consultations on the Colle. The first to show up at the Quirinale will be the pentastellati, expected at 16.30pm. At 18.00 it will instead be the turn of the League.
