Golf, Us Open: Tiger Woods will not be there

Tiger Woods will not play the 114th US Open in Pinehurst, North Carolina next month. This was announced on the website by the champion, still recovering from microdiscectomy surgery on March 31 due to a pinched nerve in his back.

“Unfortunately, I won't be there – writes Tiger – because I am not physically able to play competitive golf yet. I would like to express my regret to the USGA, volunteers and enthusiasts that I will not be at Pinehurst. The US Open is very important to me and I know it's going to be a great week. Although I have given up on the first two majors and other important tournaments, I remain very optimistic both for this year and for my future”.

This is the sixth Major Tiger has missed due to injury. After winning the US Open at Torrey Pines in 2008 (when he played with a broken leg) he underwent knee surgery which forced him to retire from competition for eight months, missing the Open Championship and the PGA Championship.

Knee and Achilles heel problems sidelined him for four months in 2011, during which time another US Open and another Open Championship took place. Tiger hasn't raced this year since the last round of the WGC-Cadillac on March 9th.
