General Motors closes in Russia, Yahoo! say hello to Beijing

General Motors changes its plans to Russia and withdraws the Opel, while Yahoo! he packs boxes and leaves the Beijing office.

As for the American automotive group, the decision to withdraw the Opel brand and to remove most of the models of Chevrolet it is linked to the changes in recent months, which show a Russian market decimated by sanctions, by the escalation of political and economic tensions and above all by the collapse of the ruble. The result of this mix is the drop in sales, which reached 38% in February.

In addition, GM will suspend the production of cars at the St. Petersburg plant by mid-2015. However, the group has specified that it will remain on the market by focusing on the premium sector with the sale of car models of the Cadillach, Chevy Camaro, Corvette and Tahoe brands, exporting them from the United States.

If GM has almost de facto said goodbye to the Russian market, the American web group Yahoo! it lowers the shutters of its Beijing office and sends home between 200 and 300 employees. The decision follows the announcement by Yahoo! of a spin-off of its stake in Alibaba, the Chinese e-commerce giant that last year went on the Wall Street Stock Exchange.

Yahoo shut down its email service in China in 2013 after it became embroiled in a scandal for allegedly providing Chinese authorities with information about a journalist who was sentenced to 10 years in prison.
