The export performance of the traditional districts of Lombardy was confirmed as positive in the third quarter of 2017. The growth trend amounts to 6,8% at current values, about two points above the national district average. In cumulative terms (January-September 2017), the increase in exports is equal to 6,1%. The good results derive from a strong drive from mature markets, +6,7% in the third quarter. In order of relevance of the contribution to the growth of Lombard exports, Germany stands out (where sales grew by 11,3% between July and September 2017), France (+6,7%), United States (+12,1 %) and Spain (+6,5%).
There was also sustained growth in exports destined for new markets (+6,8%, again in the third quarter), as well as the Lombard district aggregate. The most important contributions have come from China (where Lombardy's exports grew by 23,1%), the Russian Federation (+15,5%), Romania (+18,4%), Turkey (+11,2%), the Czech Republic (+5,6 %), Hungary (+9%), India (+9,7%).
The positive performance is widespread at a territorial and sectoral specialization level, touching 16 districts among the 23 of a traditional matrix analyzed here. The top part of the quarterly ranking includes: a wood district (Legno di Casalasco-Viadanese +20,6%), eight metalworking districts (Metalli di Brescia +17,8%, Metalworking of Lecco +14,3%, Machines for Vigevano leather tanning +13%, Lower Mantua metalworking +10,6%, Bergamo instrumental mechanics +9,3%, Arno Valley metalworking +6,3%, Lumezzane taps, valves and cookware +4,4%, Instrumental Mechanics of Brescia +3,9%), four food districts (Meat and cured meats of Cremona and Mantua +19,2%, Lombardy Dairy +14%, Wines and Spirits of Brescia + 9,1%, Pavia rice +5,1%), two textile-clothing districts (Gallaratese textile-clothing +3%, Val Seriana textile-clothing +1,9%) and a rubber district Sebino Bergamo +14,9%).
The exports of the Lombard technological poles also showed growth in the third quarter of 2017, in the order of +10,3% at current values, for an overall increase of 19,2% in the first nine months of the year. The positive evolution of foreign sales concerned three poles out of fourwith different intensities. In the lead the Lombard pharmaceutical hub (+18,4% in the July-September quarter), followed by Biomedicale of Milan (+10,8%) and Ict hub of Milan (+4,5%).
