Unemployment remains high in the euro area, but at least it has stopped growing. According to Eurostat, the figure remained fixed at 9,9% in June, close to the all-time high of 10,2% reached a year ago in the wake of the global recession. There are a total of 15,64 million unemployed in the Eurozone, just 18 thousand more than in May. However, if we look at the whole European Union (27 countries), the percentage drops to 9,4%, also in this case without registering significant fluctuations compared to the previous month. From this perspective, however, the unemployed rise to 22,473 million.
The countries where the unemployment nightmare is worst are Spain (21%), Lithuania and Latvia (both 16%). The lowest levels are instead recorded in Austria (4%), the Netherlands (4,1%) and Luxembourg (4,5%). In Italy, on the other hand, the figure stood at 8%.
