Enrico Letta accepts the position with reserve for "a government of service to the country"

“I received the assignment, which I accepted with reservations, as usual. The situation is very difficult, fragile, unprecedented. Mine is a complex and difficult attempt: I will commit myself with all possible dedication. I will try with great determination to form the new government, but not at all costs. I would call it a government of service to the country". She said it Enrico Letta immediately after having received from the Head of State the task of forming the new Executive.

“A majority did not come out of the polls and after 60 days the country is still waiting for a government. We all know that this situation cannot continue like this. That's why I accepted this responsibility, which I feel weighing on my shoulders even more than my strength allows".

Letta then reiterated the two priorities of the nascent government: firstly “il work that doesn't exist, that has been lost, businesses that close, poverty that grows, young people who leave Italy because they no longer find opportunities in our country”.

The second theme “is to restore credibility to politics – said the Premier in charge -: either everyone will find credibility, or there won't be any tools to solve the problems. This is why I will put great effort and determination so that a different Italian policy can be born from this government, with constitutional reforms to change the bicameral system, reduce the number of parliamentarians and change the electoral law".

Letta will carry out the consultations tomorrow, addressing “the responsibility of all the political forces present in Parliament and I insist in saying everyone. I will talk to everyone. We will have to reform the country together, with the widest possible participation".

NAPOLITANO: THERE IS NO ALTERNATIVE TO ENRICO LETTA

Giorgio Napolitano intervened after the appointed Prime Minister, expressing "satisfaction and serenity", because "the way has been opened for the creation of the government, which has already been awaited for too long. The only possibility is a large convergence of forces in Parliament to guarantee the government a large majority in both chambers. There is no alternative. During the consultations I held yesterday, no preliminary rulings were made regarding the name of the person to whom to appoint: I was given all autonomy, as per constitutional practice. My choice fell on Letta because, although he belongs to a young generation, he has already accumulated important experiences in Parliament, in government activity and in the political and cultural fields".
