Energy transition, FS group and Eni renew the agreement to promote the use of alternative fuels

Use alternative fuels for transport in order to speed up the energy transition towards new energy sources is the main objective of letter of intent signed by Italian FS Group and the Eni. The agreement, lasting three years and which renews a previous letter of intent, was signed by Robert Tundo, chief Technology, Innovation & Digital Officer of the Italian Railways, and by Joseph Ricci, General Director Energy Evolution of Eni.

The details of the agreement

The collaboration will focus on the implementation of alternative fuels, intermodal logistics solutions and advanced energy efficiency strategies. The agreement also includes the definition of regulations, methodologies and technical standards, as well as the testing of innovative technologies to promote sustainability and the circular economy.

A significant step in this direction was taken as early as July 2023, with the launch of HVO biofuel testing in Trenitalia's Blues hybrid trains in Calabria. HVOlution, the biofuel from renewable sources produced by Enilive and compliant with the European Directive, promises a drastic reduction in CO2eq emissions of up to 80% compared to traditional fossil fuels.
