Enel Green Power getting stronger in South America

In Guatemala, the Palo Viejo plant was connected: with its 85 MW of installed capacity, it will be able to produce 370 million kWh a year when fully operational, avoiding the emission of over 280 thousand tons of CO2 into the atmosphere - Sale thus the total installed capacity of EGP in Latin America to 754 MW.

Enel Green Power getting stronger in South America

South America is confirmed as the new frontier for energy producers. Enel Green Power has inaugurated the new hydroelectric plant of Palo Viejo, in Guatemala, in the department of Quiche. The plant has been connected to the network and will be able to produce 370 million kilowatt hours per year when fully operational, avoiding the emission of more than 280 tons of carbon dioxide into the atmosphere. “Palo Viejo constitutes a clear demonstration of the ability to build plants in Latin Americaa, geographical area with a great growth potential, where we are already strongly present”, declared the CEO of EGP, Francesco Starace. In fact, the company has one total capacity of 754 megawatts throughout the South American continent.

“The entry into operation of the new plant”, added Starace, “further increases our capacity 'zero emission' generation in Guatemala, where we have had a deep-rooted presence for some time, and demonstrates our willingness to continue to contribute to the country's sustainable growth".

However, the plant has caused quite a few controversies and the indigenous communities who live in the area have opposed the project for years. However, EGP insists that the plant will emit clean energy which will be important for the Guatemalan market. Also in recent years the Green Group has invested 4,5 million euros for the development of the indigenous communities of the area.
