Appliances and holidays: skyrocketing bills if you don't pull the plug

According to SosTariffe.it, the most "expensive" are the refrigerator, which accounts for 28,2% of waste, the stereo, for which more than 22 euros can be spent, resulting in a 16,5% increase in consumption, and a Old TV (therefore not "smart") which weighs on the increase in consumption recorded by almost 11%, with an expense of almost 15 euros.

Appliances and holidays: skyrocketing bills if you don't pull the plug

Unplugging all electrical appliances could be a good habit to adopt especially if you spend long periods of vacation away from home. According to SosTariffe.it, a non-negligible part of the electricity bill could be destined to power all those appliances that we leave on standby (ie with the red light indicating that the appliance is off) even when we are away on holiday.

The SosTariffe.it observatory analyzed the standby consumption of the most common home appliances and estimated how much you would save by permanently switching off these devices during a stay away from home (costs refer to a hypothetical month-long holiday in August 2017).

The study was conducted thanks to the tool made available by SosTariffe.it and useful for comparing all the best offers for electricity on the free market.

APPLIANCES TURNED OFF DURING HOLIDAY: YOU SAVE OVER 137 EUROS

According to the SosTariffe.it study, the final cost for those who leave in August and do not switch off their appliances is 137,10 euros (for those who have the AEEGSI tariff of the protected market). For a family of 4, with an annual consumption of 2.700 kWh per year divided into half day, half night and holidays, this means having a 25% increase in the bill.

In fact, by adding up the consumption deriving from household appliances left on standby for 1 month, we obtain a consumption of around 50 kWh which, according to current bill prices for users who have not yet switched to the free market, corresponds to around 137 euros.

Thanks to the SosTariffe.it comparator, it can also be calculated that by activating the best offer on the free market (again with reference to a consumption profile of 2.700 kWh per year, with a division of energy into half day, half night and public holidays) this expense could be reduced by 30%, arriving at paying 96 euros for standby appliances.

THE REFRIGERATOR AMONG THE MOST ENERGIVING HOUSEHOLD APPLIANCES

The analysis by SosTariffe.it has drawn up the ranking of household appliances which, if left on standby, can lead to greater waste of consumption during the holiday period.

Among these, the most energy-intensive are: the refrigerator, which impacts waste by 28,2% and causes an increase in the bill of almost 39 euros, the stereo, for which, if you don't unplug it when you go away for a month , more than 22 euros can be spent, resulting in a 16,5% increase in consumption and an old (therefore not "smart") TV which weighs on the increase in consumption recorded by almost 11%, with an expense of almost 15 euros .

THE WASHING MACHINE AMONG THE LESS IMPACT ON CONSUMPTION IN STANDBY

Contrary to what one might think – among the appliances left on standby in the summer – the washing machine has the least impact on the increase in consumption: in fact, leaving it with the socket plugged in, this device affects the increase in kWh consumed by 0,94, 1,29% corresponding to 0,73 euros per year. Even the DVD player and the smart TV are inexpensive: in standby they cost respectively 1,48 euros and XNUMX euros.

The data was extrapolated from SosTariffe.it thanks to the electricity tariff comparison tool which allows you to compare the commercial offers of the main companies active in Italy.
