Electricity consumption down in December, but wind power is booming

Significant drop in electricity consumption in Italy in December: according to the usual data provided by Terna, the company that manages the national electricity grid, in the last part of 2019 electricity demand in Italy was 25,6 billion kWh , down by 3% compared to the same month of 2018, although there was an extra working day on this occasion. The drop is more marked than the trend of the immediately preceding months and is due once again to the anomalous climate, with the average monthly temperature which in December was 1,5 degrees higher than 12 months earlier. The seasonally adjusted figure, adjusted for calendar and temperature effects, brings the variation to -2,2% in any case.

The data is uneven according to the area taken into consideration and is even more marked in the North, where consumption fell by as much as 4,3%. The Center is below the average (-2,1%), the reduction in the South is much less significant (-0,7%). Again according to the data (in this case provisional) processed by Terna, the total electricity demand in Italy in 2019 amounted to 319,6 billion kWh (-0,6% compared to 2018; in adjusted terms the change does not change ). The good news is that the incidence of renewable energy sources is increasing: in the past year satisfied 35,3% of the Italian electricity demand, an increase compared to 34,7% in 2018.

In December 2019 the demand for electricity was 86,7% satisfied with national production and for the remainder (13,3%) from the balance of energy exchanged with foreign countries. Net national production (22,5 billion kWh) was down (-2,5%) compared to December 2018. On the other hand, wind (+28,2%), water (+23,8%) %) and photovoltaic (+2,9%); thermal (-12,1%) and geothermal (-7,4%) energy decreased.
