One in six consumers have lost money to online fraud, according to MarkMonitor – Among the most common crimes are fake requests to reset social media passwords and emails impersonating legitimate companies.

45% of consumers have been a victim of some form of Cybercrime. To say it is a research of MarkMonitor, a company specializing in online brand protection, according to which, in addition, one in six consumers has lost money due to online fraud. A sub-sample in which 20% lost over 1.100 euros. According to Markmonitor, 65% of those who have suffered some form of cybercrime chose not to report the incident to the authorities.

Among the most common cybercrimes are false requests to reset the password of social media accounts, suffered by 20% of the subsample. Following in this special ranking are e-mails impersonating legitimate companies with a request for personal information (17 percent).

One of the main effects of cyber crimes, according to research, is to undermine the consumer confidence in the use of online services and in the brands involved in the fraud. In fact, 21% of the victims showed dissatisfaction with the brands involved. Concerning recent high-profile cyber attacks, however, 71% of consumers said they believed this event damaged the organization's reputation, 65% said trust in the brand had decreased, while a further 53% said that he will not engage with the brand in the future.
