China accused of spying on Apple and Amazon with a chip

Chinese spies would have installed chips in motherboards manufactured by Supermicro, a US company that supplies servers used by the government and US groups such as Apple and Amazon. Bloomberg Businessweek writes it, underlining that such a move is "potentially devastating", because it guarantees long-term access to servers. A result "for which foreign spies are willing to invest millions of dollars and many years".

Apple, Amazon and the Chinese Foreign Ministry have denied the report. The investigation cites intelligence officials as sources past and still in office as well as insiders of the two US groups.

According to Bloomberg Businessweek, American investigators believe that the offending chips were inserted by the "People's Liberation Army" into Supermicro motherboards during the production phases.
