Nuclear power plants: Sogin opens its doors to the public in May

For the first time in Italy the nuclear power plants will be open to the public. To launch the initiative is Sogin, the state-owned company that is responsible for the decommissioning of Italy's nuclear facilities.

Sogin's initiative, called “Opengate“, will allow citizens to visit the four nuclear power plants of Caorso (Piacenza), Garigliano (Caserta), Latina and Trino (Vercelli) being dismantled on Saturday 16 and Sunday 17 May.

With "Opengate" Sogin will try to make citizens aware of the work that society carries out on a daily basis to complete the dismantling of nuclear plants, in compliance with maximum safety criteria, and to raise awareness on the issue of radioactive waste management, from their storage in temporary repositories to their final settlement in the National Repository.

In the two days the power plants will be able to welcome almost three thousand visitors: a maximum of 380 per day for Trino, Caorso and Garigliano, and a maximum of 320 per day for the Latina plant. The initiative envisages two different itineraries for visits to the plants of Caorso, Garigliano and Trino: "controlled area" and "uncontrolled area".

For the Latina plant a single route is programmed, the one in an "uncontrolled area". The "controlled area" inside a nuclear plant is a delimited work environment to which access, for reasons of protection from ionizing radiation, is signaled and regulated by specific procedures and is forbidden to minors, unlike the non-controlled area at which children aged six and over can also access.

How to participate to Sogin's “Open Gate” initiative?
To be able to visit one of the four nuclear power plants it is necessary to register by Sunday 3 May exclusively through the dedicated page on the website www.sogin.it, entering your data and attaching a copy of your identification document.
