Made in Italy patents: 60% comes from 3 regions

60% of European patents made in Italy comes from only three regions: Lombardia, Emilia Romagna e Veneto. This is what emerges from a research by Unioncamere and Dintec referring to data from 2018, the latest available.

At the top of the ranking of the regions is firmly the Lombardia with 1.363 European patents. They follow Emilia Romagna (710) and Veneto (540). Off the podium the Piemonte (446) and la Toscana (350)

Among the provinces, it is in the lead Milano, which alone has 715 patents (more than the second Region in the ranking). Less than half the patents of Torino (303) and Bologna (300), respectively in second and third position. They close the top-5 Vicenza (194) and Roma (180)

Over 86% of patents have been filed by companies, while a minority share comes from the activity of private entities (9,2%) and of the Research institutions, University and Foundations (4,3%).

Most of the patents that see the light in Italy have to do with industrial and transport technologies (over 1.190 out of a total of 4.251). The other most represented technological sector (935 patents) is that of "human needs", which extends from agro-food to bio-cosmetics, from health to sport.

The data were processed during the workshop organized at the Padua Fair by the Chamber of Commerce, in collaboration with the Ministry of Economic Development and Unioncamere.

"Innovation and the protection of intellectual property are essential to allow our production system to be competitive on foreign markets - underlines the secretary general of Unioncamere, Joseph Tripoli – And their effect on local economies is significant. In Italy one job out of 3, that is almost 7 million employed, is found in companies that make intensive use of trademarks and patents; these companies alone contribute 46,9% of our GDP. Investments in the development of intellectual activity products now represent 16,3% of total business investments”.
