They consume more 21 million hectoliters per year, that is, approx 34 liters each: beer in Italy is in excellent health, it is the only sector which has recorded an increase in sales of 2 per cent a year for the past six years. Of course, the pandemic crisis marked a moment of slowdown in consumption, but all observers agree that the growth trend will recover very soon. According to research by the Birra Moretti foundation conducted by Althesys, the shared value created by the beer industry is 7,8 billion, more than 4 times the producers' turnover. With these premises eyes focused on Guide to Slow Food's 2021 Italian Beers Publisher that offers an overview of the state of health of the sector and above all points out the excellent production throughout the boot.
Luca Giaccone and Eugenio Signoroni, editors of the Guide, write in the introduction: “While we were working on this new edition, the health crisis that we are all well aware of began. However, referring to what Italian beer was before this complicated phase, we can say that it is doing well. This is demonstrated by the numbers that a few months ago spoke to us of a widespread and constant growth in consumption, exports and the diffusion of the sector”.
And it was precisely the expansion of the numbers that prompted the judges of the guide to formulate more selective parameters: ”We have reorganized the awards to beers and breweries, and given more space to Snails (the highest award from the Slow Food guides) to those producers who are a point of reference for the whole sector”.
Meanwhile, a first consideration, this year the number of breweries considered the best in Italy and awarded with the snail dwindles to 387, compared to 597 in last year's edition.
The second consideration concerns the categories: alla Chiocciola which certifies "excellent and slow breweries recognized for the quality and consistency of their beers, but also for the role played in the national brewing sector, for the identity and for the attention to the territory and to the 'environment', adds the recognition of excellence, intended for those "breweries that express a high average quality of all production".
As for the Beers, the Guide points out Slow beers – excellent products for organoleptic value, able to tell the story of a territory and be a reference for the category e Unmissable Beers, particularly notable for the organoleptic characteristics of absolute value and for the overall balance.
A total of 1866 labels are analysed. The division by regions is also very useful, with the section of establishments that support Italian craft beer: 600 addresses including pubs, beershops, wine bars and bars.
