Bersani: "We will respect the commitments made in the economy"

Bersani: "We will respect the commitments made in the economy"

If Pier Luigi Bersani becomes the new Prime Minister, Italy "will respect the very rigorous commitments made" on the economic front. This is what the secretary of the Democratic Party affirmed in an interview with the Wall Street Journal.

In particular, with regard to the European Fiscal Compact, Bersani explains that with the "revision" evoked by its economic advisor, Stefano Fassina, Italy does not intend to "renegade" the agreement, but simply “highlighting a problem, namely that European Union policy cannot focus exclusively on austerity. All this has raised a real social problem in Italy and in Europe. I'm quite sure that, next year, the situation in Europe will favor a discussion and a review of economic and fiscal policies”.

The interview also addresses the theme of the now imminent Italian political elections. If "a clear majority" does not emerge from the vote - asks the WSJ - would there be a second term for Monti? Bersani proves to be confident: “I don't think we will find ourselves in such a situation – replies the secretary of the Democratic Party -. But if that were the case, the solution would not be Monti or Bersani, but new elections".
