Bankitalia, Visco: possible public guarantees on non-performing loans

Once combined, the non-performing loans of Italian banks could enjoy the public guarantee. In this way, the State would help national institutions to relieve themselves of the loans that households and companies are no longer able to repay. This was stated by the governor of the Bank of Italy, Ignazio Visco, on the sidelines of the G20 meeting in Sydney.

Over the past six years, bank non-performing loans, i.e. loans with fewer repayment possibilities, have reached 156 billion euro, out of a total of around 300 billion euro of non-performing loans.

At the Forex in Rome on 8 February, the number one of Palazzo Koch had opened up to the idea of a bad bank and called for "more ambitious interventions" than those undertaken so far for a more efficient management of non-performing loans of a private or private nature- publish.

But everything is still to be studied”.

Lenders should carry out further write-downs and reveal higher losses. A public guarantee would allow intermediaries to sell these stranded items at higher than market prices.
