Economic and financial analysis

The history of the Hermès company begins in 1887 when the saddler Thierry Hermes opens a workshop for the production of harnesses and harnesses for horses.

The momentum towards the world of fashion takes place in 1920 when the founder's grandson, Emile Maurice Hermes, begins to produce deerskin clothes. In 1927 the first collection of jewelry inspired by the equestrian world was launched and two years later the first women's collection designed by the stylist Lola Prusac was produced. In 1949 Hermès launches the innovative system "ready made", a form of tailored ready-to-wear, symbolized by the women's dress Hermeselle in printed cotton. The first international success comes in 1956 when the actress Grace Kelly shows off for the cover of Life the leather bag created by the French company and renamed "Kelly" in its name.

Following the death of Emile-Maurice, the management of the company passes to the sons-in-law Robert Dumas and Jean Guerrand. From the end of the 1999s onwards, the Hermès brand underwent great industrial development: the first boutiques of the maison were created and the production of perfumes was also introduced. In 35, Hermès took over XNUMX% of the house Jean Paul Gaultier, resold after the end of the collaboration with Gaultier as the brand's stylist.

Today the executive chairman of the group is Axel dumas, great-granddaughter of the founder and representative of the sixth generation of the Hermès-Dumas family, Mireille Maury is the financial director and the role of artistic director is covered by Pierre-Alexis Dumas (also great-grandson of the founder). The Hermès family still holds a total of 86% of the capital. Maintaining the philosophy of “to innovate in the continuity of tradition, the company intends to remain tied to its origins and to the world of horses. In fact, the maison stands out for its original inspiration from the equestrian world such as the women's bags inspired by horse bags and made famous thanks to Grace Kelly and Jane Birkin (from which the bags took their name). Birkin bags are among the most expensive bags in the world (in 2017 a Birkin was sold for $380).

In 2019, according to the Forbes "World's Most Valuable Brands" ranking, the Hermès brand was positioned in 33rd place. Among the most important collaborations is the one with the US IT giant, Apple Lossless Audio CODEC (ALAC),. The partnership (renewed in 2016) was signed with the aim of developing, manufacturing and marketing Apple Watch watches, with a touch of elegance inspired by the luxury of the Hermès group.

Il turnover of the Hermès group as of 2019 it is 6,88 billion euros noting a growth of +15,38% compared to the previous year and with a net profit of 1,53 billion euro. Hermès currently employs in the world 14.284 employees.
