The ancestor of the Axa group is the Mutuelle de l'Assurance, born in 1817 in Paris. Axa was officially born in 1985.

In 1992 Axa acquired 60% of the capital of The equitable. In 1995, it entered the oceanic market with the acquisition of a majority stake in the Australian company National Mutual Holdings. In 2001 the company becomes AXA Asia Pacific Holdings.
