Auto, Trump praises Marchionne and perhaps exempts FCA from duties

“Bravo Sergio, are you the one who brought FCA production back from Mexico to Michigan? You are my favorite man in this room." Unlimited praise from US President Donald Trump to the CEO of FCA, Sergio Marchione in last night's meeting between the number one of the United States and car manufacturers to discuss the effects of the modification of the free agreement between the US and Canada and the anti-pollution measures.

Marchionne immediately seized the opportunity and, thanking the head of the White House, replied: "Trump is the best negotiator we have seen in a long, long time and he must be given a chance". Then the Italian-Canadian super manager said that the postponement from 2020 to 2026 of the more restrictive anti-pollution regulations proposed by Trump "is the right thing to do".

Now it remains to be seen what effect Trump's tariffs will have on car manufacturers and in particular whether FCA will be considered a European company to all intents and purposes and therefore subjected to new heavy duties on cars sold in America or whether it will be exempted in consideration of the fact that it has saved Chrysler and made large productive investments in the States, as the workers of all the Italian FCA plants hope.
