Android is now used by one in two smartphones

Android has reached 48% of the global smartphone market. This was communicated by a Canalys survey concerning the second quarter of 2011. Excellent results in particular from the Asian market, where in the Pacific regions it reaches almost monopolistic percentages (85% in South Korea).

The Google platform thus intensifies its battle with Apple in a sector, that of smartphones, in monstrous expansion (at a rate of 73% per year), which in the period in question recorded 107,7 million devices delivered worldwide. Android is used by many cell phone manufacturers and is the market leader in 35 of the 56 countries surveyed by the research firm. Units sold in the April-June period amounted to 51,9 million units, up 379% over the previous year.

For its part, Apple instead reaches first place as an individual manufacturer and, with more than 20 million iPhones sold in the second quarter, obtains 19% of the global market. It must be said that if Android is used by several brands (in particular HTC, LG, Motorola and Samsung), Apple competes alone on the market. For the Cupertino company, which is about to launch the new Iphone 5, Canalys expects a further strengthening of the commercial position for 2011.

Second place in the ranking of manufacturers for Samsung, which sold 17 million devices, up 421% on the previous year. Period instead of hard crisis for Nokia which, with a 34% drop in smartphone sales, has lost its leadership in the sector.
